Oscar J. Tolmas Scholarship Fund
GaitWay Therapeutic Horsemanship is pleased to announce its newly established partnership with the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust. The Trust was established in 2013 with the purpose of assisting tax-exempt organizations in fulfilling their missions and has partnered with numerous nonprofits in the New Orleans area. Their substantial donation to GaitWay will be allocated specifically as scholarship funds for new GaitWay riders.
The Oscar J. Tolmas scholarship fund will allow individuals to experience the many benefits of Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies. The scholarship will finance all costs for the rider over the span of 35 weeks (spring, summer, and fall sessions) and is available to all veterans, children and adults with disabilities who would benefit from GaitWay’s programs. Recipients will be reviewed and selected by a committee comprised of board members, staff, and therapeutic professionals. Though the selection will be primarily based on financial need, the review process will be multi-faceted. A waiting list will be established for those we are unable to immediately fund and will be reconsidered for scholarship as more funds become available.
Oscar Judah Tolmas was a New Orleans native and the son of two eastern European immigrants. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in 1941 and acquired his law degree from Tulane School of Law in 1943. Oscar then went on to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge in 1946, Oscar moved home to practice law with his siblings until he discovered his interest in real estate development in 1948. He established companies to pursue those interests in the Greater New Orleans area. His introduction to horse racing in 1952 quickly developed into a passion. He and one of his brothers created Tolmas Racing Stables and traveled all over the country entering their horses in various races. At the request of the Governor of Louisiana, he became the Chairman of the Louisiana Racing Commission in 1992. Oscar was married to Ms. Marjorie Ella Skinner from 1963 until her death in 2013. Mr. Tolmas left behind no children when he passed away on December 2, 2013, and his last will and testament established the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust.
GaitWay is looking forward to the positive impact this donation will make in the Baton Rouge community. All interested parties fill out the application form under the forms tab and return it to info@GaitWay.org.
